Sam Houston Historic Schoolhouse

Every year, Cedar Springs Homeschool Support Group organizes a Thanksgiving Feast at the Sam Houston Historic Schoolhouse in Maryville, TN. It happens on a Tuesday a few weeks before Thanksgiving, but the menu reflects the holiday. It starts us celebrating early.

The children get a tour of the schoolhouse, historical details on the life of Sam Houston, and demonstrations on how to make butter, candles, cornmeal etc. After the workshops, we have the meal, and then they play capture the flag. Some of the parents and coaches used to bring their children many years ago, so this tradition has been going on for years.

The weather cooperated and we ate outside. After all, the world is still suffering from the novel coronavirus. Since we are still in pandemic mode, only six of us at a time were allowed into the cafeteria to line up at the buffet in order to fill our plates. Then, we all sat at tables outside.

It was such a lovely time to fellowship with other homeschool mothers and gather information and encouragement from each other. For instance, we discussed high school credit. Now that I am staring high school in the face, I keep my ear to the ground on all things high school. I will not be producing a high school transcript myself – that is the job of our umbrella school – but I do need to be able to provide the umbrella school with documentation and descriptions of our activities, textbooks, and schedule.

We hope to be able to repeat this Thanksgiving again next year. The children had a fun time socializing, learning, and feasting.
