Session 4 A New-Collar World: Skills and Character Are the Future

The rise of a new job classification beyond white and blue collar jobs represents the future of work. Increasingly, employers have set their sights on hiring for new collar skills like software development, data science, and cybersecurity—and hiring managers are falling over themselves trying to find enough qualified talent who display high skill and high character. These high-paying, high-growth careers often don’t require a four-year, or even two-year, college degree. Rather, they require immediately applicable skills that can be taught through accelerating learning programs for a fraction of the time and cost of a college degree. In this workshop, Bethel School of Technology CEO Ryan Collins and Nathanael Miller will discuss what it looks like to prepare the next generation of employees for the future of work in these new collar skills; and why, in addition to having in-demand hard skills, individuals can set themselves apart in the job market by displaying high character that elevates a workplace culture.
