Multicultural Children’s Book Day! Where We Come From by Diane Wilson, Sun Yung Shin, Shannon Gibney, and John Coy, Illustrated by Dion MBD

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2023 (1/26/22) is in its 10th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.

Ten years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues. Read about our Mission & History HERE.

I received a book from MCBD to feature here on the blog. I’m excited to help spread the word about multicultural kids’ books! Check out my thoughts below and also make sure you scroll down to the bottom of the post to find out about the virtual party where you can join the discussion and enter to win prizes and also to see other participating reviewers!

In this unique collaboration, four authors lyrically explore where they each come from--literally and metaphorically--as well as what unites all of us as humans.

Richly layered illustrations connect past and present, making for an accessible and visually striking look at history, family, and identity.

We come from stardust / our bodies made of ancient elements. / We come from single cells / evolving over billions of years. / We come from place, language, and spirit. / And each of us comes from story.

This lovely, poetic book explores the many facets of WHERE WE COME FROM: from the fact that we are made from the stuff of stars; to the journeys, hardships, and lifestyles of the diverse authors’ various ancestors; to the authors’ hometowns; right down to their families. It explores the complexities of what makes us who we are and how we are intricately tied to the stories of those who came before us. The book presents the perspectives of four American authors, one of Native American descent, one of Korean descent, one of Irish and African descent, and another of Irish and Scottish descent. It is written in spare verse, which makes the story sing, but I also appreciated that the book contains back matter with further information about each author’s perspective.

With picturesque and atmospheric illustrations, WHERE WE COME FROM will send you on a beautiful journey!
